Complete Cleansing
In
our study of 1 John 1:5-10 it is obvious that fellowship with God is not
only obtained through the forgiveness of sin, but maintain through
forgiveness as well. As the child of God attempts to “walk in the light as
He is in the light” fellowship with God is maintained (v.7). And while this
involves attempting to “walk just as He walked” (2:6) and keep God’s law
perfectly, unlike the Lord we do not do so. Therefore, we must confess our
sins as we commit them (1:9). And as we turn from them, “He is faithful and
just to forgive us our sins.” But what if we overlook or forget a sin and,
therefore, do not confess it? Does that sin continue to separate us from
God? As John writes, “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just
to forgive us our sins” it seems obvious that the specific sins he
contemplates being forgiven are the sins that were confessed. But notice He
then says God will “cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (v. 9).
“Walking in the light” involves a disposition of heart that not only wants
to serve God perfectly, but manifests a manner of life that attempts to do
so. It involves an attitude that diligently seeks to identify, confess and
repent of sins committed in spite of our attempt to keep God’s law.
Consequently, fellowship with God is maintained as He cleanses us from all
unrighteousness.
