Knowing the Truth
Jesus said, "You shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free"
(John 8:32). While it is true that no man has perfect knowledge and that
every individual's knowledge or understanding of the truth of God is
relative to his total experience, we must remember that such inadequacies do
not render the truth of God relative. The word of God is complete (2 Tim.
3:16, 17) and bears the characteristics of God himself. As God is perfect
and immutable, so is His revelation. It contains neither error nor
ambiguity. Furthermore, it has been recorded so that when we read it we can
understand what it says (Eph. 3:3-5). I realize that there are some things
easier understood than others. But the fact is, God has delivered to man
such truth as is needed for salvation. The apostle Paul said that God
"desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth" (1
Tim. 2:4). When we consider those things essential to one's becoming a
Christian, I find it hard to believe they are all that difficult to
understand. Jesus said, "He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved"
(Mark 16:16). What part of that statement don't you understand? Often the
problem is not so much in understanding what God has said, but having the
desire and the courage to do it. Won't you obey the Lord today?
